Nonprofit/Board Training Series

The Kansas Nonprofit Chamber provides training, consulting, support, and resources to nonprofits across Kansas. Kansas Nonprofit Chamber CEO Cindy Miles has been working with nonprofit organizations for more than 10 years and has served on more than 30 nonprofit and government boards, committees, and commissions. She had a career in marketing for 25 years. Cindy has an MBA from Newman University and a BA in Integrated Marketing Communications from Wichita State University. In addition, she is a certified BoardSource Board Development Consultant and has earned a Fundraising certificate from the Lilly School of Philanthropy.


Series Overview

The following represent recorded trainings from the Nonprofit/Board Development Training Series offered in 2021 and 2022.

Boards are only effective if board members understand their roles and responsibilities. Learn about the basic responsibilities of board members and officers and what you need to do to get them to commit and follow through as well as the role of the board chair in making this happen.

Yes, you can start a business or nonprofit without a plan but a plan helps you to prepare for not only success but it is also a tool for getting funding that will help you launch and/or grow your organization. Learn the steps of creating a business plan for your business or nonprofit and work on a template for creating your own plan.

QuickBooks® is a great tool for managing your accounting, sending out invoices, collecting payments, tracking all your revenue and expenses and much more. Learn the basics of setting up QuickBooks® for your business or nonprofit including setting up a chart of accounts, templates, invoices and more.

While nonprofit boards are providing strategic directions for the organization and making big decisions much of the work happens at the committee level. This session will teach about ideal committee structures, getting committee members on board and how committees really do help your organization grow.

Learn the importance of having a Governance Committee and the huge role that this committee has in the success and effectiveness of the board as well as the committee’s role in planning for the short- and long-term future of the organization.

Evaluations of both the nonprofit board and the Chief Executive should happen annually. This session will provide insight on how this should be conducted and tools to conduct assessments of both so you can set goals for each to improve performance.

Every nonprofit board member should be responsible for helping the organization to fund raise and there are many ways to get engaged in assisting with fundraising. Find out what nonprofit board members can be doing to assist and how to get them to do so.

Fundraising is one of the biggest challenges nonprofits face. For small to medium size nonprofits its even a bigger challenge. We will go through the steps of setting goals and identifying strategies for raising funds and diversifying your funding.

You’ve heard the term in you fail to plan, you plan to fail. The creation and implementation of a strategic plan is critical to growing your organization. This session will take you through the steps of strategic planning for your organization.
